September is Healthy Aging Month! Healthy Aging Month was first introduced when baby boomers were about to turn 50. Now, over twenty years later, it continues to be an annual inspiration for older adults to take control of their health at any age. At a time when summer is coming to a close, and you’re thinking of how you’ll spend your time for the remainder of the year, let’s dive into some tips for how you can live your best life at any stage.

Embrace the freedom. For many people, growing older comes with growing freedoms: freedom from work or family obligations and freedom from caring so much about what others think! Now is the time to act the age you feel and live life with vibrance and excitement.

Try something new. Have you ever wanted to try croquet? What about learning a new instrument, tackling a new computer skill or sewing a quilt? There’s no time like the present, and learning a new skill helps keep your brain sharp. In fact, studies show that learning a new skill enhances memory.

Walk the walk. Or ride the bike. Or dance the dance! It’s no secret that staying active is great for your health. Find an activity that you enjoy, and do it regularly. Even walking has health benefits. Aim for 10,000 steps per day or 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week.

Make friends with your doc. Annual checkups are an important part of maintaining your health and wellness. If you don’t already have a primary care physician, make an appointment today for a wellness visit. This will help ensure that a doctor knows your current health status and can address any changes in health that may happen.

Get crafty. Have you ever wanted to try painting a portrait, sinking your fingers into clay, or playing the piano? Art for art’s sake is a beautiful way to enhance your life.

Taste the rainbow. Fill your plate with a range of colorful fruits and veggies every day. Eating healthy shouldn’t be about removing things from your plate; rather, it should be about making room for healthy and delicious foods that keep your body and mind feeling great.
